An American jury has ordered Samsung to pay $119.6m to Apple for smartphone patent violations, far less than Apple had sought and marking a big loss for the iPhone-maker in the latest round of the two companies’ worldwide litigation.

During the month-long trial in a San Jose, California, federal court, Apple accused Samsung of violating patents on smartphone features including universal search, while Samsung denied wrongdoing. According to an 8-person jury in the federal court, various Samsung phones and tablets, including the Galaxy S II and III, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy Nexus, infringed on three Apple patents. The jury awarded Apple $119.6 million USD in damages.

Meanwhile, the panel ruled that Apple violated one of two Samsung patents that the company had countersued over, but ruled the infringement was not willful and awarded only the $158,400.

Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV called for an investigation into the slow and expensive Internet service in the country.

The Senate should investigate why consumers are paying "steep" prices for "poor" Internet connectivity in the country, Aquino said Tuesday.

Aquino made the move after getting reports that the Philippines is lagging behind its Southeast Asian neighbors in terms of providing faster Internet connection. The reports cited an infographic from ASEAN DNA, which claimed that the Philippines (3.6 megabytes per second) lags behind Laos (4.0 Mbps), Indonesia (4.1 Mbps), Myanmar and Brunei (4.9 Mbps), Malaysia (5.5 Mbps) and Cambodia (5.7 Mbps).

The senator pointed out that on the average, local consumers spend around P1,000 a month for Internet service with speeds of up to two megabytes per second (MBPS) or about P2,000 for up to five MBPS.

But in Singapore, Aquino said the largest telecommunications company offers 15 Mbps of Internet speed for 36.90 Singapore dollars or around P1,312 a month. In Thailand, 799 baht or P1,100 could give consumers 12 Mbps of connection.

"This is expensive compared to Singapore and Thailand where we can find some of the fastest Internet connections in the world," Aquino said.

Aquino will file a Senate resolution next month to formalize his proposal, his office said.

A Senate investigation, he said, would also look into ways on how to improve the country’s poor Internet connection, which is crucial to the country’s economic growth.

“We have to find ways to improve the system and fast, especially with the ASEAN Economic Integration happenig a year from now,” Aquino said.

US mobile advertising is certainly being dominated by two giants, Facebook and Google. eMarketer report describes that the two companies now control 66.8% of the U.S. mobile ad market.

Facebook, having more than three times its share of the market from 2012 to 2013, is about to monopolize the growth in the global mobile ad industry while Google remains the dominant force having under half of the mobile ad market.

On the other hand, Twitter is the only major player other than Facebook to post an increase in its share of the mobile ad market from 1.5% to 2.4%.

The social network's ability to quickly turn around from being a desktop-focused product to being the second-largest player has sent shares in the company of more than 150% in the past year. The income has also provided the opportunity to acquire the $16 billion worth WhatsApp, another major mobile player.

It can be noted however, that big companies such as Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL are missing in the eMarketer's study of global mobile ad share. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is very vocal about the company has to make inroads in the mobile market. Meanwhile AOL is now heavily investing in another fast-growing market in the digital ad industry, the online video advertising.

A widespread outage in Gmail, Google+, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and other online services from Google was reported in the late morning/early afternoon US time January 24, 2014.

Google have already fixed the issue and Google's Vice President of Engineering Ben Treynor took to the company blog for both an explanation and an apology.

Earlier today, most Google users who use logged-in services like Gmail, Google+, Calendar and Documents found they were unable to access those services for approximately 25 minutes. For about 10 percent of users, the problem persisted for as much as 30 minutes longer. Whether the effect was brief or lasted the better part of an hour, please accept our apologies—we strive to make all of Google’s services available and fast for you, all the time, and we missed the mark today.

The issue has been resolved, and we’re now focused on correcting the bug that caused the outage, as well as putting more checks and monitors in place to ensure that this kind of problem doesn’t happen again.
While several people on Twitter claimed that they had access to Gmail during the outage, the social network was flooded with tweets about how the service was down.

Ryan Seacrest
American Idol host and serial reality TV producer Ryan Seacrest who is also known for using both an iPhone and a BlackBerry device is notorious to have invested $1 million in the Typo Keyboard, an iPhone accessory that makes typing easier. The case snaps on to the top of an iPhone and turns the touchscreen keypad into one that resembles the BlackBerry's QWERTY keyboard.

The $99 Typo Keyboard aims for those carrying two phones, one is for typing and correspondence and an iPhone for everything else. The concept is an advantage for BlackBerry users who resist switching to the iPhone probably because of loyalty to its QWERTY keyboard.

Typo Keyboard for iPhones

The Typo Keyboard is compatible for iPhone 5 and 5S only at this time. It works when Bluetooth is enabled. The accessory adds 1.4 inch in thickness and less than 1 inch to the iPhone's length. Reports said that it will be showcased at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Companies such as BoxWave and Dobi have already dabbled in the concept.

Typo keyboard is now ready for pre-orders which ships in January 2014.

Twitter is becoming more convenient to some international mobile users as it is soon available even without accessing the internet. Reuters reported that Twitter has teamed up with the Singapore-based mobile applications provider U2opia to make Twitter service available to users with phones that are non-internet capable.

Reports also said that a Twitter spokesperson confirmed the partnership but no information yet on the coverage of international users to have access to the new service. But with this service, majority of tweets will not be viewable and users will have limited access to trending topics. Users will need to type in a short code and will then have access to trending topics on Twitter from their respective location.

Facebook and Google Talk have the similar partnership with U2opia. Fonetwish, the company's product allowing users to access Facebook without the Internet but is only working with text-based messages while images and videos won't be viewable. The company already claimed that each month, more than half a million users from around the world access Facebook without Internet. Currently, Twitter has more than 218 million users worldwide of which almost 80% resides outside the United States.

Meanwhile, Facebook is adding its next billion users from emerging markets like South America and Asia which Twitter targets to have the same. In November, Twitter has already highlighted Argentina and South Africa as targets for increased user growth. The company is also including the service available to users with older phones as a step toward accomplishing its goal. Google is moving ahead with its online shopping as much as Amazon grows. In fact, the web giant is setting up an army of robots to oppose the latter’s company of drones for its product delivery.

The New York Times’ John Markoff reports that Android mobile operating system led by its former head, Google is now in silence buying up robotics start-ups for a project that apparently not just experimental. “If Amazon can imagine delivering books by drones,” Markoff writes, “is it too much to think that Google might be planning to one day have one of the robots hop off an automated Google Car and race to your doorstep to deliver a package?”

With Amazon’s recent release of, to some extent, unrealistic marketing video that has something to do with the whole process of product delivery by drones, Markoff’s sources say that Google is taking incremental steps to automate steps all along the consumer-product supply chain, from manufacturing to shipping. Delivery seems to be the process where Google has made the strongest points.

There are speculations that autonomous vehicles would power Google’s new same-day delivery online shopping service. In the process, from factory to fulfillment center, the attempt is to optimize the actions of human workers according to calculations made by computers.

Last year, Amazon spent $775 million for the purchase of warehouse ‘bot maker Kiva Systems. It simply implies the company’s serious move towards automation. With this in mind, Amazon still has to employ tens of thousands of people to pick and process orders in its massive distribution centers. And this gives a hint that the company’s robotic dream has a long way to go. And it only means more room and time for Google and Rubin to catch up to compete in this automation project.

Here’s a story of a lost phone which was luckily traced by its legitimate owner from the suspected thief. The thief took several “selfies” using the alleged stolen phone but unknowingly, the images taken were automatically uploaded to the owner’s Dropbox account linked to the phone.

Shortly thereafter, the person who took the pictures got traced and put himself in trouble. The alleged thief is now faced with complaint before the authorities. According to the owner, the first photos were taken around the time the phone was stolen. Good thing, for any reason, she was able to link the phone to her Dropbox account and probably this is the best thing she got from it.

For all gadget fanatics, there are several ways to protect your expensive gadgets. For Apple devices, iCloud can help you. Just sign in at iCloud.com or use the Find My iPhone app to see your missing iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac on a map. And with the Lost Mode feature you don’t just see where your device is, you can track where it’s been.

And for Android users, they can now lock their lost devices remotely. Google's Android Device Manager lets users remotely lock a lost or stolen device with a new password. On your Android device, open the Android Device Manager. Check the options to remotely locate your device and to allow remote lock and factory reset if not already checked.

Don’t panic. Technology works in many ways at times when it is badly needed.
