Senator Miriam Santiago, in her privilege speech against Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile, made some references from the popular book and movie series "The Hunger Games."

Santiago reiterated that, "By comparison, "Enrile with his eternal philandering and unexplained wealth desperately needs a shrink, as a mental health measure. His mind is sick, sick, sick!"

Momentarily, Santiago made mention "The Hunger Games”, which was not part of her written piece, and said to Enrile’s face, "You are three times sick! To use the language of Katniss Everdeen in the 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire,' ayan o (raises three middle fingers), three times sick ka!" She even showed a cross sign with her index fingers while saying, "At para lang sigurado, eto."

Catching Fire is Suzanne Collins’ second book of its trilogy focusing on Katniss as the unwilling figure of hope as opposed to the oppressive government of Panem. On the other hand, the book's movie version starring American actress Jennifer Lawrence as the heroine, is currently showing in the Philippines theaters.

Santiago's move of raising three fingers, in "The Hunger Games", is a sign used by the residents of District 12 where Katniss lives. Katniss description of her gesture is: "It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love."

In the end, Netizens as seen on Twitter, made fun on Santiago's speech and sent varied tweets about her actions to Enrile with reference to the Hunger Games. One funny idea is that Santiago’s gesture would lead to a rebellion against Enrile as Katniss in the novels implies.

While a furious Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago was delivering her privilege speech Wednesday, December 4 entitled “Navigating the Crimes of the Plunder Mastermind”, a disinterested-looking Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile who sat directly across the lady senator had the time in the world to play with his tablet.

Photos immediately circulated over social media sites showing the senate minority leader playing a famous tablet game called Bejeweled.

Santiago’s privilege speech was her official statement in response to Enrile’s previous speech last month.

On November 27, Enrile delivered a privilege speech – in response to earlier attacks by Santiago. He called her a “cuckoo, inane and bitter mind,” “the grandmama of all falsehood fabricators,” and a “spiteful and bitterly hostile mind” for blaming him of being the multi-billion peso pork barrel scam mastermind, a murderer, and for supposedly funding the Zamboanga City obstruction.

Now that it was Santiago’s turn, she dismantled Enrile by calling him a “psychopathic hypersexualized serial womanizer,” as well as “the icon of shameless lying,” “incorrigible liar,” “the prince of darkness,” “gambling and smuggling king,” and “the drama king of corrupt politics.”

As Santiago was burning with anger in the course of delivering her speech, the other senators were intently listening to her while the main object of her address was observed to be just sitting coolly, periodically shaking his head and grinning occasionally.

In a speech minutes after Santiago’s, the former Senate President meanwhile denied the accusations against him. In an interview with the members of media, the former Senate President jokingly said "is it my fault that I am good-looking?
