Musician Freddie Aguilar is marrying his 16-year-old girlfriend Jovie Gatdula Albao in Muslim rites in Buluan, Maguindanao, on Friday, local news website, Inquirer.net reports.
Aguilar’s relationship with Albao has been under great scrutiny after coming out in public due to their age difference and the fact that Albao is a minor.
Under the country’s civil code, a 16-year-old girl is still a minor and isn’t allowed to marry. But in Islamic Shariah Law, however, qualification for matrimony is reckoned on the first menstrual day of the bride as exemplified in the marriage of Prophet Mohammad and Aisha, who was about 16-years-old then.
Maguindanao Governor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu disclosed his planned hosting of the controversial marriage by solemnizing their wedding under Muslim rites.
Mangudadatu said he has agreed to officiate the solemnization under Presidential Decree 1083 (Muslim Family Code of the Philippines) after Freddie Aguilar agreed to embrace Islam.
