Fourteen people were reportedly killed and thirty-four were injured after a female suicide bomber blew herself up in front of a train station in the southern Russian city of Volgogard on Sunday, December 29.
The incident caused heightened alarm since this is the second attack in the span of 3 days just as Russia is about to host the winter Olympic games in February.
"A suicide bomber who was approaching a metal detector saw a law enforcement official and, after growing nervous, set off an explosive device," Russia's investigative committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said in televised comments.
The police officer who saw the suspect died in the blast while several others who were near the metal detectors got wounded.
"It was a very powerful blast," train station store attendant Valentina Petrichenko told the Vesti 24 news channel.
"Some people started running and others were thrown back by the wave of the blast," she added. "It was very scary."
