
English-Irish boy band One Direction has been named MTV Star of 2013 on Sunday, December 22 after garnering a huge number of votes online in the annual #MTVStars social media drive.
Out of the 117 million votes collected worldwide, the British boy band alone was able to gather 40.8 million, beating Canadian Pop Star Justin Bieber with 40.5 million votes.

“We’ve just found out that you voted us top of the list for the MTV Stars Of 2013 so thank you so, so much. We heard we racked up over 40 million votes. We can’t believe the hard work – it must have taken you absolutely ages. Thank you so, so much!” said One Direction member Liam Payne in a message to the group’s fans.
“Party time!” added another member, Louis Tomlinson.
MTV gave a chance for music fans to vote for the biggest and best musical acts of 2013 using the hashtag #MTVstars on the month-long activation. It was a trending topic in 127 locations around the world and registered an astounding 50,000 tweets per minute.
Included in the top 10 of MTV’s Stars of 2013 were Ke$ha with 4.17 million votes, 30 Seconds to Mars with 4.16 million, The Wanted with 3.4 million, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Rihanna and Little Mix.
In addition to the #MTVStars social media campaign, MTV will also award “MTV’s Biggest Music Moments of 2013” this month, which will revisit the year’s most talked about music moments.
