Brittany Murphy's hair shows evidence of rat poison, her father claims

A new report casts doubt on the circumstances surrounding Brittany Murphy's death. New questions are being raised in the 2009 death of "Clueless" actress Brittany Murphy.

The body of the actress was found at her Los Angeles home in December 2009 by her mother with the coroner originally attributing her death to acute pneumonia and anaemia.

However, a lab report commissioned by Angelo Bertolotti, the man claiming to be Murphy's biological father, showed the presence of heavy metals at two to nine times higher than the levels identified by the World Health Organization as being considered "high."

The compounds are found in most rodenticides and insecticides leading her family and their experts to believe she may have been given rat poisoning.

"I have a feeling that there was a definite murder situation here," he told "Good Morning America. "It's poison, yes, I know that."

"Brittany Murphy's death is highly supsicious," attorney Cyril Wect told "GMA." "It is a report from an accredited laboratory. It cannot be ignored."

The Los Angeles Coroner's Office ruled that the 32-year-old actress died in December 2009 of pneumonia, anemia and prescription drug intoxication.

Dissatisfied with the coroner's ruling, last January, Angelo Bertolotti sued the police for samples of Murphy's hair, blood and tissue, so that he could have her cause of death verified independently.

Murphy's husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, 40, died in similar circumstances five months later.

According to Bertolotti, Murphy and Monjack suffered from headaches, abdominal cramps, wheezing, disorientation, congestion and pneumonia -- some of the same symptoms caused by heavy metal poisoning.

Bertolotti said he wanted law enforcement to reopen the death investigation.
